Former Mid-Buchanan All-State standout Brett Pierce is now ready for his next journey in basketball, this time as the Head Coach of the Chilhowee Indians. Pierce, who also played basketball at the college level at Peru State, will serve as a PE teacher in the class 1 school district.
Pierce helped out with the Mid-Buchanan Basketball team this past season in a volunteer role and has also assisted the team in their summer activities throughout the years. As a player, Pierce was an All-State Point Guard on the Dragon team that won a class 2 District title in one of NWMO's memorable district clashes of all-time. That title ended a 25 year drought for District titles at the school. Pierce scored over 1,000 points in a career that saw him involved in over 90 wins. Pierce will take over a team coming off a 21-7 and will likely blend his experiences at Mid-Buchanan and Peru State as well as dip into a family of coaches that include his father Bob, who was a coach at Mid-Buchanan as well. The Mid-Buchanan family wishes him the best at Chilhowee. The next chapter of Braydn Kemper's storied career will continue on at the University of Saint Mary as Kemper officially sealed the deal on his commitment to become a Spire yesterday afternoon in the library at Mid-Buchanan.
A packed library full of family, friends, teammates and Kq2 were in witnesses to the last act as a Dragon Basketball player for Kemper. Kemoer leaves the school as the all-time assist leader as well as the school's first two time All-State player. He finished with 1,191 career points and broke various career and single season records. "Braydn is Mid-Buchanan and what the school should strive to be. He was not only a leader on the court but also off the court as evident by his honors he has received in academics as far as being first in his class, academic All-State, lettering in multiple sports, state choir, class president, the school play, etc. His playing days are over but his impact will be felt on the program and next generations for a long time making his overall impact immeasurable." - Coach Kemper Mid-Buchanan fans will still have a chance to see Chase Gilbert hoops it up some more as the energetic, defensive minded jack of all trades signed the dotted line to play at Westminster College this morning in a signing ceremony at the school's library.
A packed library witnessed the signing and congratulated the future Westminster student-athlete. Gilbert was a 2 year starter and 4 year letter winner for the Dragons who started on the 2015 State Runner-up team. He also served as Captain this year. "Chase as been an invaluable member of the Mid-Buchanan program even before the past four years and will be missed but we are confident Westminster is getting a great player, a better person and a young man that will pour his heart and soul into their program. He will always be known for his Hustle and Grit here at MB and I'm sure they will see it quickly their as well." - Head Coach Bryce Kemper Four Senior Dragons will take the floor as teammates at least one more time in the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association Coaches Challenge this Saturday. The tournament is a single elimination tournament that pits teams from 8 different regions of the state against each other. The tournament coincides with the MBCA coaches hall of fame ceremonies and Academic All-State ceremonies where NW team members Braydn Kemper, Tanner Smith and Alex McQuinn are part of. The games take place at Drury University in Springfield.
The Northwest area team has had some struggles in the past and drew the powerhouse Southeast Missouri team in the opening round which is always usually loaded and features 3 players from the class 4 Sikeston Final Four team. Chase Gilbert, Braydn Kemper, Jake Meikel and Jackson Rumpf will represent Mid-Buchanan on the team. Zac Johnson, Bubba Miller and Colby Rapp will represent East Buchanan on the team. Tanner Smith will represent Lawson on the team. Jordan Leonard will represent Winston on the team. Jackson Beaver and MJ Johnson will represent Benton on the team. Alex McQuinn will represent Stanberry on the team. The NW team will play at 4:30 at Drury University this Saturday. Mid-Buchanan's new district features a defending undefeated state champion moving up a class and a class 3 team moving down a class among others.
Familiar faces include Gallatin, Maysville and Polo who were all part of the previous year's district. New teams entering the fold include Tarkio (East Atchinson) and Stanberry who both move up from class 1. Stanberry won the Class 1 state title a year ago and became the first school in the history of Missouri to go undefeated in Football and Basketball on way to state titles in both. Stanberry has been to 3 Final Fours in the past 4 seasons earning quite the recent reputation. Meanwhile, Princeton moves over a few districts and enters District 16 while Plattsburg, a team that has made noise the last two years in Class 3 District 16, will move down to Class 2 with a full roster returning. http://www.news-leader.com/story/sports/high-school/2016/04/08/springfield-host-high-school-football-basketball-state-championship-games/82820500/
Kevin Wyatt's record of Field Goal Percentage had stood the test of time until a year ago when Austin Scaggs finally took down the 3 decade old record. However, Austin Scaggs' record would not stand for nearly as long Hunter Scaggs broke the record this season hitting 63% of his shots from the field. Hunter led the team in scoring with over 400 points and rebounding as just a sophomore for the Dragons.
Senior Braydn Kemper became the 1st Mid-Buchanan Dragons Basketball player in school history to earn back-to-back Missouri Basketball Coaches Association All-State honors.
Kemper and teammate Austin Scaggs made the team a year ago as they helped dspearhead that teams historical run to the Final Four and State Championship game. Kemper averaged over 12 points a game, 4.9 assists a game and hit a school record 77 three point shots at a 47% accuracy. |
